The strongest network in Puglia, the region in southern Italy where Cortése was born, will not appear when someone is «big enough». It will grow out of two properties that answer for each other — and then a third. Whoever waits for the numbers before building a network will never build one.
It is the natural instinct, and it sounds reasonable: first we build the product, fill the properties, and then, when there are lots of us, we'll think about connecting them. That is exactly the reasoning that keeps a network standing still for ever.
Because a network is not a prize that arrives once you are big: it is how you become big. The first property to join doesn't find a hundred colleagues waiting — but it finds a pact. And that pact is worth something from the day there are two. Waiting for «the numbers» means asking everyone to join last. That way, nobody joins.
Behind the name is something as old as hospitality: you lend each other a hand. Every property keeps its own store of contacts — the olive mill, the boat, the doctor. In the Network, which today is taking shape among properties in Puglia, that store is lent when it is needed.
It is half past ten at night. A guest asks you for a boat at dawn tomorrow, and you don't have that boat. A colleague fifteen kilometres away does. They answer. And tomorrow it will be you answering for one of their guests. This is what really passes through a network of hosts:
«They're not my guest. But tonight, they're Puglia's guest.»
A strange thing about networks: every property that joins doesn't increase its own value — it increases the value of all of them. On your own you know your stretch of coast very well. Two of you know two areas. Twenty of you know the whole of Puglia, and every guest reaps the benefit without even knowing it: they ask their host, and the experience of all the others answers.
That is why the first ones count for more than anyone who comes later. Not because they are better: because they lay the ground everyone else will walk on.
A network between properties only works if it stays honest. Three pacts, from the start, not negotiable:
